The Hawthorne experiments were conducted at Western Electric’s Hawthorne plant in Illinois, running from 1924 through 1932. These experiments were intended to examine how people would react to certain conditions such as light, heat, and humidity. These variables were altered and produced both expected and unexpected results.The Hawthorne Experiments had helped the human relations in the organization. There have been some settings that had been patterned based on the effects of the experiments of Hawthorne Experiments. The experiments had helped a lot in determining the behavior patterns of the workers in the workplace.The most significant discovery from the Hawthorne experiments was that workers were not so much impacted by physical working conditions and remunerations, or by changes thereof, than they were by the very fact that they were being observed.
The Hawthorne Effect is a psychological phenomenon that refers to the effect on a person’s or group behavior when they know they are being observed (Last, 2002). The Hawthorne Effect is commonly beneficial, as the person or group tend to improve behaviors or increase productivity when under observation (Last, 2002).The Hawthorne Experiments were conducted in the Western Electric Company in Ciero, Illinois to understand the importance of human behavior and the worker productivity. The Hawthorne Studies had four phases which were the illumination experiment, the relay-assembly group experiment, interviewing program and the bank-writing observation-room group studies.
